Q. What do Sterility and Infertility mean?

• Primary Sterility :


A. This is when the couple cannot achieve a pregnancy after a year of normal sexual intercourse without birth control..

• Secondary Sterility :


A. When the couple cannot achieve a new pregnancy after the first child and after having normal sex for one year without birth control.

• Primary Infertility :


A. This is when the couple achieves a gestation, but it does not end with a normal birth.

• Secondary Infertility :


A. After a normal pregnancy and birth, the couple does not obtain a new gestation which ends with a normal birth.

Q. Sterility rate? :
R. Approximately 15% of the couples nowadays have some sterility problems.

Q. Should I contact a reproduction specialist? :
A. After trying to achieve a pregnancy for one year with normal sex without being successful, you should visit a specialist.

Q. How does age influence the possibility of getting pregnant? :
A. As for women the fertility rate decreases slowly from 35 to 40, from this very moment a remarkable drop in the possibility of a gestation occurs.

Q. What is the ideal frequency to have sexual intercourse in order to obtain a pregnancy?:
A. There is no such ideal frequency. The best thing to do is to respect the natural frequency within the couple, without being obsessed with the idea of finding the most suitable moment.

Q. Are assisted reproduction techniques dangerous?.
A. The only adverse effects are hyperstimulation and a multiple pregnancy.

Q. How many attempts are necessary to achieve a pregnancy?
A. By Conjugal Artificial Insemination, between 4 and 6 attempts
    Artificial Insemination by Donor, a minimum of 6 attempts
    IVF (In-Vitro fertilization) and Sperm microinjection, up to 4 attempts.
    Oocyte donation, there is no established limit.

Q. Are assisted reproduction techniques painful?.
A. Insemination isn’t painful at all. In-Vitro fertilization and sperm microinjection are performed under sedation and recovery doesn’t go beyond a few hours.

Q. Can we choose sperm and oocyte donors?
A. It is completely impossible. The choice is made by a medical team, always taking into account the couple’s main characteristics.

Q. May donors know receivers’ identities and vice versa?.
A. The law guarantees confidentiality on both parts. So they never know each other’s identity.

Q. Are assisted reproduction techniques expensive?
A. Prices vary a lot depending on the assisted reproduction technique. It may range from 500€ with the simplest technique up to 5000€ using the most complex one.

Q. What’s the success rate of each technique?
A. Conjugal Artificial Insemination: 18% per cycle.
    IVF (In-Vitro fertilization): 35% per cycle.
    Sperm microinjection: 20% per cycle
    Artificial Insemination by Donor: 30% per cycle.
    Oocyte donation: 50% per cycle.

Q. What’s the percentage of a multiple pregnancy?.
A. Twin pregnancy is about 15% and 25%.
    Triplet pregnancy doesn’t reach 3%.
